Estudiantes and Chacarita get closer

Feb 7. In week 3 of the Closing 2010, Estudiantes beat San Lorenzo 2-0 with goals from Boselli (2) and Verón (44). Goals.

Chacarita won 2-1 against Banfield at Diego Maradona Stadium. They were losing with goal from Cristian García (10) but they turned the game around with a header from Lisandro López (50) and a goal from Parra (55). Goals.

Racing lost 4-2 to Arsenal in Avellaneda. They were winning twice with goals from Cahais (header, 9) and Hauche (61). But Arsenal drew first with goal from Jara (25) and then they turned the scoring around with one goal from Galván (73) and two from Óbolo (85, 89). Goals.

River and Rosario Central ended in a scoreless draw at the Monumental Stadium.

Vélez lead the standings with 7 points followed by Estudiantes, Chacarita and Godoy Cruz with 6, Colón with 5 and Independiente with 4 and Argentinos Jrs also with 4 and one game suspended. On Monday, Godoy Cruz host Independiente.

Vélez at the top

Feb 6. In week 3 of the Closing 2010, Vélez beat Gimnasia LP 2-1 with goals from Ormeño (own goal, 7) and Tobío (header, 25). Colombian striker Pérez closed the gap for the 'Wolf' (40). Goals.

Newell's won 4-2 against Boca at Marcelo Bielsa Stadium with goals from Insaurralde (header, 2), Achucarro (16), Formica (18) and Bernardi (91). Palermo (penalty, 35) and Viatri (87) closed the gap for 'Xeneixes'. Goals.

Colón drew 2-2 with Tigre in Victoria. They went ahead twice with goals from Ríos (4) and Pellerano (49) but 'Matador' managed to draw twice with two goals from Ayala (18, 64 -penalty-). Goals.

Argentinos Jrs hammered Lanús 6-3. They were losing 2-0 with goals from Aguirre (10) and Salcedo (free kick, 12) but they turned the game around with goals from Erramuspe (own goal, 24), two from Pavlovich (44, 56), Sosa (63), Ortigoza (penalty, 69) and Hernández (79). Díaz closed the gap for 'Garnets' (81). Goals.


Godoy Cruz only leaders

Gimnasia celebrate in the Derby of La Plata

Feb 3. In week 2 of the Closing 2010, Gimnasia won the Derby of La Plata 3-1 at the 'Forest' with two goals from Straqualursi (45 -header-, 81) and one from Cuevas (93). Verón had closed the gap for Pinchas at 89th minute. Orión saved a penalty shot by Straqualursi (52). Goals.

Boca beat Lanús 3-1 at the 'Chocolate Box' Stadium with goals from Medel (13), Palermo (47) and Erbes (header, 56). Castillejos had scored the equaliser from a header for the 'Garnets' (42). Goals.

Huracán beat Newell's 2-1 in Parque Patricios with goals from Goltz (penalty, 28) and Balvorín (header, 84). Núñez had scored the equaliser from a header for the 'Leprosy' (70). Goals.

Banfield and Argentinos Jrs were drawing 0-0 and was suspended because of the rain at 8th minute.


'Local' National Team: Diego calls up 18 players

Feb 3. Diego called up 18 players to join the "Local" National Team for a friendly against Jamaica on Wednesday 10 in Mar del Plata: Campestrini (ARS), Ibáñez (GCR); Caruzzo (ARG), Canuto (ARG), Echeverría (CHA), Galeano (IND), Mercado (RAC); Mercier (ARG), Méndez (BOC), Acevedo (IND), Toranzo (HUR), Licht (RAC), Insúa (BOC), Gaitán (BOC); Palermo (BOC), Hauche (RAC), Bieler (RAC), Jara (ARS). In the origianl list there were four Estudiantes players (they play for Libertadores Cup one day later) and one injured player: Pereyra (ATU). They had to be removed and replaced after the squad was published.

Jan 26. In a friendly at San Juan, 'Local' National Team beat Costa Rica 3-2 with goals from Sosa (11, header), Burdisso (37) and Jara (79). Barrantes, from a free kick, (20) and Madrigal (76) scored equalisers for 'Ticos'. Goals. Argentina lined up: Campestrini; Clemente Rodríguez, Matheu (5 Caruzzo), Guillermo Burdisso, Monzón; Sosa, Mercier (69 Razotti), Erviti (46 Enzo Pérez), Gaitán (46 Insúa); Hauche (62 Jara), Palermo (73 Boselli).


Libertadores Cup: Colón win with little difference; Newell's just draw

Jan 27. In the first leg of the preliminary round, Newell's were held to a scoreless draw by Emelec at Parque Independencia. Second leg will take place on Wednesday 10 in Quito.

Jan 26. In the first leg of the preliminary round, Colón won 3-2 against Universidad Católica at the 'Cemetery of the Elephants' with goals from Nieto (5), Fuertes (66) and a nice run from Bertoglio (69). Morales scored both goals for 'Crusades' (35 -header- and 81). Goals. Second leg will take place on Tuesday 9 in Chile. Away goals are important.

The rest of Argentine teams is qualified for group round. In group 4Lanús host Libertad on Tuesday 9. In group 6Banfield host Morelia on Wednesday 10. In group 7, Vélez host Cruzeiro on Wednesday 10. In group 3Estudiantes host Juan Aurich on Thursday 11.


Argentina lose to Catalonia

Dec 22. In a friendly game, Argentina lost 4-2 to Catalonia at Camp Nou Stadium, Barcelona, with a header from Sergio García (44), goal from Bojan (55), penalty from Sergio (69) and a header Moisés Hurtado Pérez (76). Pastore (63) and Di María (72) closed the gap for our National Team. Goals. Argentina lined up: Pozo; Cristian Alvarez (79 Salvio), Demichelis, Otamendi (46 Pareja), Papa (62 Dátolo); Pastore, Bolatti, Gago (78 Banega), Di María; Lavezzi, Higuaín (68 Palermo).

Argentina will play next friendly on March 3 against Germany in Munich.

Dec 20. Five players are out: Ansaldi, Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Aimar and Agüero. Four more were called up: Papa (VEL), Banega (VAL-SPA), Pastore (PAL-ITA) and Salvio (LAN).

Dec 4. Final Round of World Cup 2010 was finally drawn. Argentina, top seed of Group B, will play their first match against Nigeria on Saturday, June 12. Then, Argentina face South Korea on Thursday 17 and close the group against Greece on Tuesday 22. The group doesn't seem to be very difficult but we have to play the games.

South American Cup: Vélez and San Lorenzo eliminated

Nov 5, 2009. In the second leg of quarter-finals of South American Cup 2009, Vélez lost 2-1 to Liga Universitaria in Quito. They were winning with goal from Rodrigo López (43) but Liga turned the scoring around with two headers from Vera (68) and Espínola (75). Goals. Vélez were eliminated.
Oct 20. In the first leg, Vélez drew 1-1 against Liga Deportiva Universitaria at Liniers. Vélez went ahead with a header from Rodrigo López (6) but Bieler scored the equaliser from the floor for Liga (53). Goals.

Nov 4. In the second leg of quarter-finals of South American Cup 2009, San Lorenzo lost 1-0 to River de Montevideo at the New Gasometre Stadium with goal from Porta at 46th minute and they defined by penalties. In the shoot-out, River won 7-6 in nine shots. Aguirre missed third penalty and keeper Dos Santos saved the first shot to Bottinelli and the ninth one to Pintos. Shoot out: Part 1 - Part 2. The 'Cyclone' were eliminated.
Oct 21. In the first leg, San Lorenzo beat Uruguayan River 1-0 in Montevideo with a header from Pintos at 71st minute. The Cyclone played with ten from 55th minute when 'Chaco' Torres was sent off.


World Cup U-17: Argentina eliminated in eighth-finals

Nov 4, 2009. In eighth-finals of U-17 World Cup in Nigeria, Argentina lost 3-2 to Colombia in Ijebu-Ode and were eliminated. They were winning 2-0 with goals from González Pirez (17) and Araujo (57). But they lost with goals from Murillo (63), Blanco (88) and Quiñónez (91). Cuellar missed a penalty at 67th minute after a play in which Argentinian captain Espínola was sent off. Goles. Libertadores Cup: Estudiantes champions of America

In the second leg of the final, Estudiantes won 2-1 against Cruzeiro at the Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte and they became champions of the Libertadores Cup for the fourth time in their history. They started losing with goal from Henrique at 52nd minute but they came from behind with goal from 'Gata -Pussycat-' Fernández (57) and a header from Boselli (73). Goals. In December, 'Pinchas' will play in the Club World Cup in United Arab Emirates with Barcelona and Mexican Atlante.

Jul 8. In the first leg, Estudiantes drew 0-0 with Cruzeiro in La Plata.


Vélez are the champions

Jul 5, 2009. In the last week of Closing 2009, Vélez won 1-0 against Huracán with goal from Maxi Moralez at 83rd minute and won the championship for the 7th time in their history. The 'Balloon' keeper, Monzón, had saved a penalty shot by Rodrigo López at 26th. Highlights including partial suspension because of hail, saved penalty, goal and celebration.

Vélez ended at the top of the standings with 40 points followed by Huracán and Lanús with 38 and Colón with 34. For relegation play-offs, on Wednesday, Rosario Central visit Belgrano. On Thursday, Gimnasia LP visit Atlético Rafaela.

Argentina lined up: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Pareja, Monzón; Mascherano, Gago; Messi, Riquelme (90th Sosa); Di María, Agüero. First half was levelled but in second half Argentina found spaces after the goals, Brazil lost control, ended with nine -Lucas and Thiago Neves saw the red card-, and the game ended in a historic victory.

They were losing with goals from Christian Díaz -own goal- at 17th and Silva at 62nd and the cup was travelling to Mexico. But Andrizzi scored at 83rd and gave the first title to Arsenal.

Nov 30. In the first leg, Arsenal beat América 3-2 at México. They started losing with goal from Cabañas at 5th. Matellán scored the equaliser from a header at 31st. Argüello put the Mexican team ahead again at 53rd and "Papu" Gómez turned the score around with two goals at 56th and 65th. Arsenal ended with ten: Casteglione was sent off at 80th.

Historic third place for Los Pumas

Oct 19, 2007. Argentine rugby national team, Los Pumas, beat France 34-10 in the match for the third place of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France. It was the best place for Los Pumas in the World Cups history.
South Africa had won the semifinal 37-13. In quarter-finals, Los Pumas beat Scotland 19-13. Los Pumas had won their four games of the group D: 17-12 over France, 33-3 over Georgia, 63-3 over Namibia and 30-15 over Ireland.

World Cup U-20: Argentina hexachampions

Jul 22, 2007. In the final match of U-20 World Cup at Canada, Argentina beat Czech Republic 2-1 at Toronto and became champions for the sixth time in their history (1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005). They started losing with goal from Fenin at 60th but they came back with goals from Kun Agüero at 62nd and Mauro Zárate at 85th. Libertadores Cup: Boca champions for sixth time

Jun 20, 2007. In the second leg of the finals, Boca won 2-0 over Gremio at Porto Alegre with goals from Riquelme at 68th and 80th and won Libertadores Cup for sixth time in their history.

Jun 13. In the first leg, Boca hammered Gremio 3-0 with goals from Palacio at 18th after Palermo's cross from the left, Riquelme at 73rd - free kick, Morel touched the ball and Román shot- and and own goal from Patrício at 88th after Ledesma's header.


End of dream after shoot-out

Jun 30, 2006. In quarter-finals Argentina lost 4-2 to Germany on the penalties shoot-out at Berlin. The match had ended 1-1. Ayala opened the scoring from a header at 49th after Riquelme's corner-kick from the right. Klose, also from a header, scored the equaliser at 80th. In the penalties shoot-out, Alemania scored four; in Argentina, Cruz scored, Ayala got his shot saved, Maxi Rodríguez scored and Lehmann saved Cambiasso's shot. Argentina lined up Abbondanzieri (71st Leo Franco -Pato was injured-); Coloccini, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Lucho González, Mascherano, Maxi Rodríguez, Riquelme (72nd Cambiasso); Tévez, Crespo (78th Cruz). Argentina had control of the ball during first half and Germany after first Argentine goal. Argentina had two scoring chances from counterattack but couldn't take profit of them. In extra-time, Argentina suffered the substitutions and were not deep in attack, even though they had the ball during second half of extra time.

Jun 24. In eighth-finals, at Leipzig, Argentina beat Mexico 2-1 in extra time. Rafa Márquez opened the scoring for the Mexican team at 5th and Crespo scored the equaliser at 10th after a corner-kick shot by Riquelme from the right. In extra time, at 98th, Maxi Rodríguez received an air pass, stopped the ball with his chest out of corner of the area on the right, and shot high with his left foot before the ball touched the ground to the opposite angle of the goalkeeper. Argentina line up: Abbondanzieri; Scaloni, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Cambiasso (76th Aimar), Riquelme; Saviola (84th Messi), Crespo (75th Tévez). Mexico had a very good start, played better than Argentina and deserved a bit more in first half. In second half, Mexico defended more but Argentina only had two clear goal chances. Argentina didn't play well but could take advantage thanks to a great shot.

Jun 21. In the third match of Group C in Frankfurt, Argentina and Netherlands ended in a scoreless draw. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Burdisso (24th Coloccini), Ayala, Milito, Cufré; Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Cambiasso, Riquelme (80th Aimar); Tévez, Messi (70th Cruz). Argentina looked for the victory a bit more than the Netherlands but they were not as effective in the area as in previous games. It was not necessary to take many risks because we have to play again in three days for the final rounds.

Jun 16. In the second match of Group C in Genselkirchen, Argentina hammered Serbia & Montenegro 6-0. At halftime they were winning 3-0 with goals from Maxi Rodríguez at 6th after pass from Saviola from the left; Cambiasso at 31st, great goal after great team play with a wall pass between Cuchu and Crespo's backheels pass; and Maxi Rodríguez again at 41st shooting from the left to correct a Saviola's shot from the right which Serbian defense had saved. In second half, Crespo scored at 78th after Messi's pass from the left, Tévez extended the advantage at 84th dribbling on the left with two tunnels to the defenders and Messi closed the scoring at 88th. Lucho González got injured. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Burdisso, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Mascherano, Lucho González (17th Cambiasso), Maxi Rodríguez (75th Messi), Riquelme; Saviola (59th Tévez), Crespo. Argentina were very effective in first half and during second half they took advantage of Serbia keeping the 0-3 and played at excellent level with many skill plays.

Jun 10. In the first match at Hamburg, Argentina won 2-1 over Cote d'Ivoire. Crespo scored the first goal at 24th after a free kick from Riquelme from the left and rebound in the defense. Saviola extended the advantage at 38th after a great pass from Riquelme that let him alone with the goalkeeper. Drogba closed the gap at 82nd.
During first half Cote d'Ivoire had more possesion of the ball and attacked more but Argentina could take profit of their chances. Good job of our National Team defense. In the second half, Argentina controlled the game in the first twenty minutes and when Pekerman took Crespo out, the African team began to attack but they only could close the gap.
