Libertadores Cup: San Lorenzo and Boca in quarter-finals

May 8. In the second leg of eighth-finals, San Lorenzo drew 2-2 against River with nine players at the Monumental Stadium. River were winning with a free kick from Abelairas at 11th and a penalty from Abreu at 61st. The Cyclone had seen two red cards: Rivero at 42nd and Bottinelli at 58th. But Bergessio scored twice at 69th and 72nd -header- to give the ticket to San Lorenzo. Goals. In quarter-finals, San Lorenzo will host Liga de Quito.
Apr 30. In the first leg, San Lorenzo won 2-1 over River. Silvera put them in advantage at 27th. Falcao scored the equaliser from a header at 30th and Adrián González gave them the victory from a penalty at 87th. Goals.

May 7. In the second leg of eighth-finals, Boca beat Cruzeiro 2-1 at the Mineirão Stadium with goals from Palacio at 36th and Palermo -header- at 44th. Wágner closed the gap at 56th. Goals. In quarter-finals, Boca will host Atlas.
Apr 30. In the first leg, Boca won 2-1 over Cruzeiro with goals from Riquelme at 6th and Dátolo at 65th. Fabrício closed the gap at 78th. Goals.

May 6. In the second leg of eighth-finals, Estudiantes won 2-1 over Liga de Quito but that was not enough and they were eliminated. Liga started winning with goal from Bolaños at 26th. Estudiantes came back with goals from Alayes at 42nd and Maggiolo at 65th but they needed two more. Goals.
Apr 29. In the first leg, Estudiantes lost 2-0 to Liga Universitaria at Quito with goals from Guerrón at 64th and Manso at 77th. Goals.

May 6. In the second leg of eighth-finals, Lanús drew 2-2 with Atlas at Guadalajara. Atlas went ahead twice with goals from Bruno Marioni at 29th and Mendivil at 78th. Lanús managed to draw twice with goals from Sand at 64th and Acosta at 90th. Goals. Lanús were also eliminated.
Apr 29. In the first leg, Lanús lost 1-0 to Atlas at home with a back-heels goal from Bruno Marioni at 37th.


San Lorenzo reached the top

May 4. In week 13 of the Closing 2008, San Lorenzo beat Gimnasia LP 2-1 at La Plata. They were losing with a penalty from Fede Domínguez at 31st but they came back with goals from goalkeeper Kletnicki -own goal- at 61st and Romeo at 83rd. Goals.

Vélez won 2-0 over Tigre with goals from Escudero at 65th and Silva at 80th.

Rosario Central beat Racing 3-2 in final minute. The 'Academy' went ahead with an own goal from Raldes at 43rd and Navarro had saved a penalty shot by Vizcarra at 34th. Central came back with goals from Vizcarra at 77th and Díaz at 83rd. Sava scored the equaliser from a header at 87th and 'Kily' González gave the victory to the 'Scoundrels' at 90th. Goals.

Estudiantes, River and San Lorenzo lead the standings with 27 points followed by Boca with 26, Vélez with 24, Independiente with 23 and Newell's with 21. In week 14, on Friday, Gimnasia de Jujuy hill host Colón. On Saturday, Vélez will host Rosario Central. On Sunday, Estudiantes will host Boca, San Lorenzo will host Independiente and River will host Gimnasia LP.

Boca celebrated in the Super Derby

May 4. In the Super Derby of week 13 of the Closing 2008, Boca beat River 1-0 at the Chocolate Box Stadium with a header from Battaglia at 14th after a corner-kick from the right shot by Riquelme.

Independiente get closer

May 3. In week 13 of the Closing 2008, Estudiantes lost 2-1 to Argentinos Jrs at La Paternal with goals from Hauche at 24th and Delorte at 50th. Carrasco closed the gap at 72nd. Goals.

Independiente hammered Newell's 3-0 with two goals from Denis at 32nd and 36th and one from Guillermo Rodríguez at 45th. Goals.

Colón won 3-2 over Banfield with one goal from Prediger at 1st and two from Ramírez at 49th and 71st. Goalkeeper Blázquez -own goal- at 23rd and Cvitanich at 89th closed the gap for the 'Drill'. Goals.

Olimpo beat San Martín 1-0 at San Juan with goal from Leandro González at 45th.


Arsenal hammered Lanús

May 2. In week 13 of the Closing 2008, Arsenal hammered Lanús' substitutes 6-2 with two goals from Leguizamón, two from Garnier, one from Biagini and the other one from goalkeeper Cuenca -penalty-. Sigali and Ramírez closed the gap for the 'Garnet'. Goals.

Huracán won 1-0 over Gimnasia de Jujuy with goal from Franzoia at 8th.


Victory in Egypt

Mar 26. In a friendly match, Argentina beat Egypt 2-0 at El Cairo with goals from Kun Agüero at 65th and a header from Burdisso at 84th. Goals. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Zanetti, Demichelis (83rd Coloccini), Burdisso, Heinze; Lucho González, Mascherano, Gago, Maxi Rodríguez (89th Zabaleta); Agüero (86th Lisandro López), Cruz (69th Cavenaghi).
Argentina didn't play a great game and they could stay calm just after first goal.
Mar 25. Cambiasso and Gabriel Milito are out because of injuries.

Next friendlies will be played by Major National Team: June 4 vs Mexico at San Diego and June 8 vs USA at New York.

In WC Preliminary Round, Paraguay lead the standings with 10 points, followed by Argentina with 9 and Brazil and Colombia with 8. Week 5 will be played in June. Argentina will host Ecuador and then they will visit Brazil.

U-23: Argentina hammered Guatemala

Feb 6. In a U-23 friendly, Argentina hammered Guatemala 5-0 at Los Angeles with two goals from Higuaín at 14th and 70th and one from Lavezzi at 33rd, Maidana at 85th and Ruben at 88th. Argentina lined up: Ustari; Zabaleta (67th Maidana), Demichelis, Fazio, Escudero (86th Di María); Banega, Mascherano, Sosa (45th Ansaldi); Riquelme; Higuaín, Lavezzi (84th Ruben). Argentina was the only team in the field and Lavezzi was the best player.

Feb 3. 3 players are out: Garay (gastric problem), Gago (tight muscle) and Agüero (sprained ankle). Jonathan Maidana -Boca- and Augusto Fernández -River- were called instead.
Jan 22. U-23 National Team will play in the Olympic Games in August from 6 to 23. Their coach, Sergio "Checho" Batista, called 18 players for the friendly against Guatemala at Los Ángeles on February 6: Ustari (GET-SPA), Sergio Romero (ALK-NED); Federico Fazio (SEV-SPA), Zabaleta (ESP-SPA), Garay (RAC-SPA), Ansaldi (RKA-RUS); Gago (RMA-SPA), Éver Banega (VAL-SPA), José Sosa (BMU-GER), Escudero (VEL), Di María (BEN-POR); Gonzalo Higuaín (RMA-SPA), Kun Agüero (ATM-SPA), Lavezzi (NAP-ITA), Rubén (HUE-SPA). We must add the three over-23 players allowed by regulations : Demichelis (BMU-GER), Mascherano (LIV-ENG), Riquelme (BOC). Messi was not called because he is recovering from an injure.


Club World Cup: Boca runners-up

Dec 16. In the final game of the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, Boca lost 4-2 to Milan. Inzaghi opened the scoring at 20th but Palacio scored the equaliser quickly two minutes later. In the second half, Milan took advantage with goals from Nesta at 49th, Kaká at 61st and Inzaghi again at 70th. Amorosini closed the gap from an own goal at 84th. After the loss, Russo quitted as Boca coach.

South American Cup: Arsenal champions

Dec 5. In the second leg of the final, Arsenal lost 2-1 to América at Racing Stadium but they became champions thanks to away goals. They were losing with goals from Christian Díaz -own goal- at 17th and Silva at 62nd and the cup was travelling to Mexico. But Andrizzi scored at 83rd and gave the first title to Arsenal.

Nov 30. In the first leg, Arsenal beat América 3-2 at México. They started losing with goal from Cabañas at 5th. Matellán scored the equaliser from a header at 31st. Argüello put the Mexican team ahead again at 53rd and "Papu" Gómez turned the score around with two goals at 56th and 65th. Arsenal ended with ten: Casteglione was sent off at 80th.


Lanús are the champions

Dec 2. In week 18 of Opening 2007, Lanús drew 1-1 against Boca at Bombonera and won the local championship for the first time in their history. Sand opened the scoring for the Garnet at 37th and Palermo scored the equaliser at 67th.

Tigre lost 1-0 to Argentinos Jrs with a penalty from Bárzola at 56th and ended at the second place.

Lanús, the champions, ended at the top of the standings with 38 points followed by Tigre with 34, Banfield with 32 and Boca and Argentinos Jrs with 31.

Historic third place for Los Pumas

Oct 19. Argentine rugby national team, Los Pumas, beat France 34-10 in the match for the third place of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France. It was the best place for Los Pumas in the World Cups history.
South Africa had won the semifinal 37-13. In quarter-finals, Los Pumas beat Scotland 19-13. Los Pumas had won their four games of the group D: 17-12 over France, 33-3 over Georgia, 63-3 over Namibia and 30-15 over Ireland.

World Cup U-20: Argentina hexachampions

Jul 22. In the final match of U-20 World Cup at Canada, Argentina beat Czech Republic 2-1 at Toronto and became champions for the sixth time in their history (1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005). They started losing with goal from Fenin at 60th but they came back with goals from Kun Agüero at 62nd and Mauro Zárate at 85th. Argentina lined up: Romero; Mercado, Fazio, Sigali, Insúa; Sánchez, Banega, Piatti (80th Acosta), Moralez (92nd Cabral); M.Zárate, Kun Agüero.

Libertadores Cup: Boca champions for sixth time

Jun 20. In the second leg of the finals, Boca won 2-0 over Gremio at Porto Alegre with goals from Riquelme at 68th and 80th and won Libertadores Cup for sixth time in their history.

Jun 13. In the first leg, Boca hammered Gremio 3-0 with goals from Palacio at 18th after Palermo's cross from the left, Riquelme at 73rd - free kick, Morel touched the ball and Román shot- and and own goal from Patrício at 88th after Ledesma's header.


Cup Winners Cup: Boca champions

Sep 14. In the second leg of the South American Cup Winners Cup (Recopa), Boca drew 2-2 against São Paulo at Morumbi Stadium. They were losing with goal from Junior at 35th. They came back with goals from Palacio -header- at 40th and Palermo at 76th. Morel scored the equaliser from an own goal at 86th. Boca won their 16th internacional cup and Basile left Boca to coach the National Team only.

Sep 7. In the first leg, Boca won 2-1 over São Paulo at the Chocolate Box Stadium. They were losing with goal from Thiago at 30th but they came back with two goals from Palacio at 53rd and 72nd.


End of dream after shoot-out

Jun 30. In quarter-finals Argentina lost 4-2 to Germany on the penalties shoot-out at Berlin. The match had ended 1-1. Ayala opened the scoring from a header at 49th after Riquelme's corner-kick from the right. Klose, also from a header, scored the equaliser at 80th. In the penalties shoot-out, Alemania scored four; in Argentina, Cruz scored, Ayala got his shot saved, Maxi Rodríguez scored and Lehmann saved Cambiasso's shot. Argentina lined up Abbondanzieri (71st Leo Franco -Pato was injured-); Coloccini, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Lucho González, Mascherano, Maxi Rodríguez, Riquelme (72nd Cambiasso); Tévez, Crespo (78th Cruz). Argentina had control of the ball during first half and Germany after first Argentine goal. Argentina had two scoring chances from counterattack but couldn't take profit of them. In extra-time, Argentina suffered the substitutions and were not deep in attack, even though they had the ball during second half of extra time.

Jun 24. In eighth-finals, at Leipzig, Argentina beat Mexico 2-1 in extra time. Rafa Márquez opened the scoring for the Mexican team at 5th and Crespo scored the equaliser at 10th after a corner-kick shot by Riquelme from the right. In extra time, at 98th, Maxi Rodríguez received an air pass, stopped the ball with his chest out of corner of the area on the right, and shot high with his left foot before the ball touched the ground to the opposite angle of the goalkeeper. Argentina line up: Abbondanzieri; Scaloni, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Cambiasso (76th Aimar), Riquelme; Saviola (84th Messi), Crespo (75th Tévez). Mexico had a very good start, played better than Argentina and deserved a bit more in first half. In second half, Mexico defended more but Argentina only had two clear goal chances. Argentina didn't play well but could take advantage thanks to a great shot.

Jun 21. In the third match of Group C in Frankfurt, Argentina and Netherlands ended in a scoreless draw. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Burdisso (24th Coloccini), Ayala, Milito, Cufré; Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Cambiasso, Riquelme (80th Aimar); Tévez, Messi (70th Cruz). Argentina looked for the victory a bit more than the Netherlands but they were not as effective in the area as in previous games. It was not necessary to take many risks because we have to play again in three days for the final rounds.

Jun 16. In the second match of Group C in Genselkirchen, Argentina hammered Serbia & Montenegro 6-0. At halftime they were winning 3-0 with goals from Maxi Rodríguez at 6th after pass from Saviola from the left; Cambiasso at 31st, great goal after great team play with a wall pass between Cuchu and Crespo's backheels pass; and Maxi Rodríguez again at 41st shooting from the left to correct a Saviola's shot from the right which Serbian defense had saved. In second half, Crespo scored at 78th after Messi's pass from the left, Tévez extended the advantage at 84th dribbling on the left with two tunnels to the defenders and Messi closed the scoring at 88th. Lucho González got injured. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Burdisso, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Mascherano, Lucho González (17th Cambiasso), Maxi Rodríguez (75th Messi), Riquelme; Saviola (59th Tévez), Crespo. Argentina were very effective in first half and during second half they took advantage of Serbia keeping the 0-3 and played at excellent level with many skill plays.

Jun 10. In the first match at Hamburg, Argentina won 2-1 over Cote d'Ivoire. Crespo scored the first goal at 24th after a free kick from Riquelme from the left and rebound in the defense. Saviola extended the advantage at 38th after a great pass from Riquelme that let him alone with the goalkeeper. Drogba closed the gap at 82nd.
During first half Cote d'Ivoire had more possesion of the ball and attacked more but Argentina could take profit of their chances. Good job of our National Team defense. In the second half, Argentina controlled the game in the first twenty minutes and when Pekerman took Crespo out, the African team began to attack but they only could close the gap. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Burdisso, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Mascherano, Cambiasso, Maxi Rodríguez, Riquelme (92nd Aimar); Saviola (76th Luis González), Crespo (64th Palacio).

May 15. Boca champions

May 7. In week 18 of the Closing 2006, Boca beat Independiente 2-0 at Avellaneda with goals from Palacio at 36th and Palermo at 46th and won the championship for the second time in a row.

Boca, the champions, lead the standings with 40 points, followed by Lanús with 34, Gimnasia LP with 32 and River with 31. In week 19, last one, Boca will celebrate against Olimpo, Lanús will host Estudiantes, Gimnasia will host Banfield and River will visit Quilmes.

U-20: Argentina penta-champions

Jul 2. In the final, of the U-20 World Championship 2005 at Netherlands, Argentina beat Nigeria 2-1. Messi opened the scoring from a penalty at 40th. Ogbuke scored the equaliser at 53th. Messi gave the championship to Argentina from another penalty at 75th. Argentina lined up: Ustari; Barroso, Garay, Paletta, Fórmica; Zabaleta, Torres, Gago (71st Biglia), Archubi (60th Armenteros); Messi, Oberman (56th Agüero).
It was the fifth championship after Japan '79, Qatar '95, Malaysia '97 and Argentina '01.

Aug 28. In the final of the Olympic Games Athens 2004, Argentina beat Paraguay 1-0. Tévez, top scorer of the tournament with 8 goals, scored the only goal at 17th after Rosales' cross from the right to the near post. Argentina lined up: Lux; Coloccini, Ayala, Heinze; Lucho González, Mascherano, Kily González, D'Alessandro; Rosales, Tévez, Delgado (75th Clemente Rodríguez). Argentina was the best team of the tournament with 17 goals for and 0 goals against and deserved to bring a gold medal to Argentina after 52 years.

Jul 20. Aug 28. In the basketball final game of the Olympic Games Athens 2004, Argentina beat Italy 84-69 and won the second gold medal in the Games. Scola was the top scorer with 25 points. In semifinals, Argentina had won 89-81 over the USA Dream Team with 29 points from Ginóbili.

Jul 25. In the final of America Cup, Argentina lost 4-2 to Brazil in the penalty shoot-out. Júlio César saved D'Alessandro's shot and Heinze kicked the ball over the crossbar. The game had finished 2-2. Argentina went ahead with a penalty from Kily González at 20th. Luisão scored the equaliser from a header at 45th. Delgado gave the second advantage at 87th and when the Cup seemed to come to Argentina, Adriano scored the equaliser at 93rd, with 20 seconds left. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Coloccini, Ayala, Heinze, Zanetti, Mascherano, Sorín, Lucho González (29'ST D'Alessandro), Kily González; Tévez (47'ST Quiroga), Rosales (18'ST Delgado). Argentina played better than Brazil and deserved the cup, but there were two distractions in the finals seconds of each half and the championship went to Brazil.

Nov 10. The homage to Diego Maradona took place at the Chocolate Box Stadium with 50.000 people attending. Our National Team with Maradona beat the Stars Team 6-3. Argentina lined up Burgos (45th Cavallero); Zanetti, Ayala (45th Pochettino), Samuel (45th Berizzo); Sorín (45th Placente), Almeyda (45th C.Husaín), Verón (45th Castromán), Maradona, Aimar; Claudio López (45th Cruz), Kily González.
