Libertadores Cup: Estudiantes to the final

Jul 1. In the second leg of semifinals, Estudiantes beat Nacional 2-1 at the Centenary Stadium in Montevideo. Boselli scored both goals for 'Pinchas' at 52nd and 91st minutes. Medina had scored the equaliser at 76th minute for the Uruguayan team. Goals. First leg of the final will take place on Wednesday 8 in La Plata against Cruzeiro.
Jun 25. In the first leg, Estudiantes won 1-0 against Nacional in La Plata with a header from Galván at 14th minute.

Jul 2. In the other semifinal, Gremio and Cruzeiro drew 2-2 in Porto Alegre. Cruzeiro advanced to the final.
Jun 24. In the first leg, Cruzeiro beat Grêmio 3-1 in Belo Horizonte.


End of nightmare for two

Jun 26. In a brought-forward match of week 19 and last one of Closing 2009, Arsenal and Independiente ended their poor tournament with a 1-1 draw. Jara opened the scoring for Arsenal at 32nd minute and Mancuello scored the equaliser for the 'Red Devils' from a free kick (61). Goals.

Huracán lead the standings with 38 points followed by Vélez with 37, Lanús with 35, and Colón with 34. Championship will defined next week because of elections. On Sunday 5, Huracán will visit Vélez. Winners will be the champions. If they draw, the 'Balloon' are the champions.
Also on Sunday 5, Gimnasia LP host Gimnasia de Jujuy and San Martín de Tucumán host Lanús. If the 'Wolf' win they go to relegation play-offs and the 'Saints' will be relagated. Same happens if San Martín don't win. If San Martín win and the 'Wolf' lose, Gimnasia are relegated and the 'Saints' to play-offs. If San Martín win and the 'Wolf' draw a tie-break will be held.

Huracán go to the 'final' with advantage

Jun 21. In week 18 of Closing 2009, Huracán hammered Arsenal 3-0 with goals from Bolatti (a header in 37th minute), Toranzo (81) and Defederico (83). Goals.

Vélez drew 1-1 with Lanús. They were losing with goal from 'Pepe' Sand at 31st minute. They lost Cubero for a red card (46) but they managed to draw from a penalty shot by Hernán López (69). Goals.

Godoy Cruz won 1-0 against River with goal from Borghello at 10th minute and escaped from relegation and play-offs.

Gimnasia LP beat Boca 2-1 at the Chocolate Box Stadium with headers from Alonso (3) and Agüero (54). Palermo had scored the equaliser from a penalty (42). Goals.

Colón beat Estudiantes 3-1 with goals from Rivarola (24), Ramírez (52) and a header from 'Bichi' Fuertes (88). Calderón had closed the gap for 'Pinchas' (61). Goals.


Racing finally saved of relegation play-offs

Jun 20. In week 18 of Closing 2009, Racing beat Gimnasia in Jujuy 2-0 with goals from Sosa (68) and Leandro González (91). Goals. The 'Academy' got saved from direct relegation and the 'Promotion', the relegation play-offs.

Rosario Central beat Tigre 1-0 in Victoria with goal from Moreno y Fabianesi at 68th minute. Islas had saved a penalty shot by Moreno y Fabianesi at 7th. The 'Scoundrels' couldn't escape from relegation play-offs and they will face Belgrano de Córdoba. After Central's victory, Gimnasia LP will play at least relegation play-offs.

San Lorenzo won 1-0 against Independiente with goal from 'Cuqui' Silvera at 56th minute.


San Martín are still alive

Jun 19. In week 18 of Closing 2009, San Martín de Tucumán won 1-0 against Newell's at Parque Independencia with goal from Urbano at 35th minute. San Martín would have been relegated with a tie.

Argentinos Jrs and Banfield drew 1-1. The 'Little Red Bugs' went ahead with goal from Peñalba (19) but Barraza scored the equaliser from a header for the 'Drill' (58). Goals.

In the standings for South American Cup, Lanús (qualified) lead with 72, Vélez (also qualified) 63, San Lorenzo 60, Tigre 59, Huracán 58 and Colón 57. First four will qualify. Boca and River are always awarded a wild card for this Cup.


Atlético Tucumán and Chacarita to First Division

Jun 20. National B ended today. Atlético Rafaela and Belgrano qualified to play the 'Promotion', play-offs against two First Division teams for two places in 1st A. Belgrano will face Rosario Central and Rafaela will face Gimnasia LP or San Martín de Tucumán. Gimnasia de Jujuy were relegated and Gimnasia LP and San Martín fight in relegation standings.

Jun 8. Chacarita won 1-0 over Platense and clinched second birth in First A.

Jun 7. Atlético Tucumán beat Talleres 4-1 and clinched one of the two births in First Division in season 2009/10.


Argentina lose in Ecuador

Jun 10. In the game of Week 14 of the WC Preliminary Round, Argentina lost 2-0 to Ecuador at Quito with goals from Ayoví at 72nd and Palacios at 83rd. Goals.
Argentina lined up: Andújar; Zanetti, Demichelis, Otamendi, Heinze (82nd D.Milito); Maxi Rodríguez, Battaglia, Gago (75th Verón), Jonás Gutiérrez; Messi, Tévez (67th Bergessio). Argentina had the chance to go ahead but Elizaga saved a penalty shot by Tévez at 28th. It was another poor game for our National Team.

In WC Preliminary Round, Brazil lead the standings with 27 points, followed by Chile with 26, Paraguay with 24, Argentina with 22, Ecuador with 20 and Uruguay with 18. In Week 15, in September, Argentina will host Brazil and in Week 16, Argentina will visit Paraguay.

Jun 9. Agüero is out because of a muscle injury and Mascherano is out because of two cautions.
Jun 6. In Week 13 of the WC Preliminary Round, Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 with goal from 'Cata' Díaz at 55th after Verón's corner-kick from the left. Argentina lined up: Andújar; Cata Díaz, Demichelis, Heinze; Gago (46th Zanetti), Mascherano, Jonás Gutiérrez; Verón; Messi, Agüero (41st D.Milito), Tévez (86th Burdisso). Our National Team didn't play well but they got three very important points.

May 31. Angeleri got injured in one knee and is out of the squad.
May 22. 'Local' National Team beat Panama

May 20. In a friendly played at Colón Stadium, the 'Local' National Team beat Panama 3-1 with one goal from Defederico at 27th and two from Bergessio at 39'PT -header- and at 84th. Barahona had scored the equaliser at 29th. Goals. Argentina lined up: 1-Pozo (73rd 12-Campestrini), 4-Ferrero (67th 21-Canuto), 2-Caruzzo, 6-Otamendi; 14-Salvio (58th 11-Blanco), 5-Bernardello (46th 15-Prediger), 8-Rinaudo (60th 16-Zuculini), 7-Defederico (46th 3-Papa), 19-Montenegro; 18-Bergessio, 9-Sand (46th 20-Fuertes).

May 17. Boca and Estudiantes players are out (they are playing Libertadores Cup), Caraglio, Formica and Maxi Moralez are out because of injuries and Prediger (COL) and 'Bichi' Fuertes (COL) were called.

Caruso's Racing lose unbeaten streak

May 17. In week 14 of Closing 2009, Racing lost 2-1 to San Martín de Tucumán at Avellaneda with goals from Turdó at 30th and Urbano at 59th. Cáceres had scored the equaliser at 34th for the 'Academy'. Goals. Racing lost again after eight games with Caruso Lombardi as coach.

Estudiantes hammered Independiente 5-1 with goals from Salgueiro -header- at 16th, Federico Fernández -header- at 41st, Galván at 46th, Núñez at 52nd and Valencia at 89th. 'Rolfi' Montenegro closed the gap for the 'Red Devils' at 82nd. Goals.

Boca won 2-1 over Arsenal. They were losing with goal from Matos at 7th but they came back with goals from Lucho Figueroa at 24th and Chávez at 41st. Goals. Campestrini saved a penalty shot by Riquelme at 12th.

San Lorenzo thrashed Gimnasia at Jujuy 3-0 with one goal from Bergessio at 56th and two from Fornaroli at 65th and 70th -header-. Goals.


South American U-20: Argentina out of World Cup

Feb 8. In the last game of final round of South American U-20 at Venezuela, Argentina lost 1-0 to Colombia with a header from Chará at 65th. Insúa was sent of at 85th

Brasil, the champions, ended with 12 points followed by Paraguay with 8, Uruguay and Venezuela with 7, Colombia with 6 and Argentina with 2. First four qualified for U-20 World Cup at Egypt. Argentina ended at the last place and won't play U-20 World Cup at Egypt.

Boca champions despite the loss

Dec 23. In the third tie breaker of Opening 2008, Boca lost 1-0 to Tigre at Racing Stadium but they became champions because of goals difference. Lazzaro scored the only goal from a header at 68th. Boca won the 23rd local championship of their history.

Dec 20. In the second tie breaker, Boca beat San Lorenzo 3-1 at Racing Stadium. They went ahead with a header from Viatri at 45th. Solari scored the equaliser for the 'Cyclone' at 60th. Boca won it with goals from Palacio at 77th and Chávez at 92nd. Goals. San Lorenzo ended with nine players: Aguirre was sent off at 79th and Bergessio at 87th.

Dec 17. The first tie breaker was played at Vélez Stadium. San Lorenzo won 2-1 over Tigre with goals from Barrientos at 18th and Bergessio at 20th. Lazzaro closed the gap from a header at 75th. Goals. Tigre goalkeeper, Islas, was sent off in injury time.

Closing'09 will begin on February 6.


South American Cup: Estudiantes runners-up

Dec 3. In the second leg of the finals, Estudiantes and Inter drew 1-1 at Porto Alegre. Estudiantes won 1-0 in regulation with goal from Alayes at 65th and they had to play extra-time. Nilmar scored at 113rd for Inter and gave the Cup to them. Goals.
Nov 26. In the first leg, Estudiantes lost 1-0 to Inter de Porto Alegre at La Plata with a penalty from Alex at 34th. Inter were playing with ten from 24th when Guiñazú had been sent off.


Recopa: Boca champions

Aug 27. In the second leg of Recopa Sudamericana (Cups Winners Cup), Boca drew 2-2 with Arsenal at the Chocolate Box Stadium. They were winning with goal from Palacio at 6th. Arsenal came back with goals from Carrera at 58th and Matos at 69th. The team from Sarandí was playing with nine: Báez was sent off at 64th and Díaz at 79th. Riquelme scored the equaliser from a free kick at 92nd. Goals. Boca added other title to the stats and now they have 18 international cups.

Aug 13. In the first leg, Boca beat Arsenal 3-1 at Avellaneda with goals from Palermo -rebound from a penalty saved to himself- at 20th, Palacio at 31st and Battaglia at 89th. Sava had scored the equaliser from a header at 25th. Goals.


Olympic Games: Gold medal again !

Aug 23. In the final, Argentina beat Nigeria 1-0 with goal from Di María at 57th, chipping the ball over the goalkeeper after pass from Messi. Argentina lined up: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Pareja, Monzón; Mascherano, Gago; Messi (92nd Lavezzi), Riquelme; Di María (88th Banega), Agüero (79th Sosa). Argentina won the gold medal for second time in a row.

Aug 19. In semifinals, Argentina hammered Brazil 3-0 with two goals from Kun Agüero at 52nd and 57th after crosses from Di María and Garay and one penalty from Riquelme at 75th. Goals. Argentina lined up: Romero; Zabaleta, Garay, Pareja, Monzón; Mascherano, Gago; Messi, Riquelme (90th Sosa); Di María, Agüero. First half was levelled but in second half Argentina found spaces after the goals, Brazil lost control, ended with nine -Lucas and Thiago Neves saw the red card-, and the game ended in a historic victory.

Jul 31. River celebrated the championship

Jun 22. In week 19 of the Closing 2008, River won 3-2 over Banfield. They were losing with two goals from Cvitanich at 41st and 51st -penalty-, but they came back with two goals from Falcao at 70th and at 86th and one from Abelairas at 83rd. Goals. River celebrated the 33rd title in their history.

Boca hammered Tigre 6-2 with two goals from Palacio at 6th and 53rd, two from Palermo at 29th and 60th, one from Paletta at 40th and one from Chávez at 82nd. Goals. Boca ended as runners-up.

River, the champions, ended at the top of the standings with 43 points followed by Boca and Estudiantes with 39 and San Lorenzo with 35.


Club World Cup: Boca runners-up

Dec 16, 2007. In the final game of the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, Boca lost 4-2 to Milan. Inzaghi opened the scoring at 20th but Palacio scored the equaliser quickly two minutes later. In the second half, Milan took advantage with goals from Nesta at 49th, Kaká at 61st and Inzaghi again at 70th. Amorosini closed the gap from an own goal at 84th. After the loss, Russo quitted as Boca coach.

South American Cup: Arsenal champions

Dec 5, 2007. In the second leg of the final, Arsenal lost 2-1 to América at Racing Stadium but they became champions thanks to away goals. They were losing with goals from Christian Díaz -own goal- at 17th and Silva at 62nd and the cup was travelling to Mexico. But Andrizzi scored at 83rd and gave the first title to Arsenal.

Nov 30. In the first leg, Arsenal beat América 3-2 at México. They started losing with goal from Cabañas at 5th. Matellán scored the equaliser from a header at 31st. Argüello put the Mexican team ahead again at 53rd and "Papu" Gómez turned the score around with two goals at 56th and 65th. Arsenal ended with ten: Casteglione was sent off at 80th.


Lanús are the champions

Dec 2, 2007. In week 18 of Opening 2007, Lanús drew 1-1 against Boca at Bombonera and won the local championship for the first time in their history. Sand opened the scoring for the Garnet at 37th and Palermo scored the equaliser at 67th.

Tigre lost 1-0 to Argentinos Jrs with a penalty from Bárzola at 56th and ended at the second place.

Lanús, the champions, ended at the top of the standings with 38 points followed by Tigre with 34, Banfield with 32 and Boca and Argentinos Jrs with 31.

Historic third place for Los Pumas

Oct 19, 2007. Argentine rugby national team, Los Pumas, beat France 34-10 in the match for the third place of the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France. It was the best place for Los Pumas in the World Cups history.
South Africa had won the semifinal 37-13. In quarter-finals, Los Pumas beat Scotland 19-13. Los Pumas had won their four games of the group D: 17-12 over France, 33-3 over Georgia, 63-3 over Namibia and 30-15 over Ireland.

World Cup U-20: Argentina hexachampions

Jul 22, 2007. In the final match of U-20 World Cup at Canada, Argentina beat Czech Republic 2-1 at Toronto and became champions for the sixth time in their history (1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005). They started losing with goal from Fenin at 60th but they came back with goals from Kun Agüero at 62nd and Mauro Zárate at 85th. Argentina lined up: Romero; Mercado, Fazio, Sigali, Insúa; Sánchez, Banega, Piatti (80th Acosta), Moralez (92nd Cabral); M.Zárate, Kun Agüero.

Libertadores Cup: Boca champions for sixth time

Jun 20, 2007. In the second leg of the finals, Boca won 2-0 over Gremio at Porto Alegre with goals from Riquelme at 68th and 80th and won Libertadores Cup for sixth time in their history.

Jun 13. In the first leg, Boca hammered Gremio 3-0 with goals from Palacio at 18th after Palermo's cross from the left, Riquelme at 73rd - free kick, Morel touched the ball and Román shot- and and own goal from Patrício at 88th after Ledesma's header.


End of dream after shoot-out

Jun 30, 2006. In quarter-finals Argentina lost 4-2 to Germany on the penalties shoot-out at Berlin. The match had ended 1-1. Ayala opened the scoring from a header at 49th after Riquelme's corner-kick from the right. Klose, also from a header, scored the equaliser at 80th. In the penalties shoot-out, Alemania scored four; in Argentina, Cruz scored, Ayala got his shot saved, Maxi Rodríguez scored and Lehmann saved Cambiasso's shot. Argentina lined up Abbondanzieri (71st Leo Franco -Pato was injured-); Coloccini, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Lucho González, Mascherano, Maxi Rodríguez, Riquelme (72nd Cambiasso); Tévez, Crespo (78th Cruz). Argentina had control of the ball during first half and Germany after first Argentine goal. Argentina had two scoring chances from counterattack but couldn't take profit of them. In extra-time, Argentina suffered the substitutions and were not deep in attack, even though they had the ball during second half of extra time.

Jun 24. In eighth-finals, at Leipzig, Argentina beat Mexico 2-1 in extra time. Rafa Márquez opened the scoring for the Mexican team at 5th and Crespo scored the equaliser at 10th after a corner-kick shot by Riquelme from the right. In extra time, at 98th, Maxi Rodríguez received an air pass, stopped the ball with his chest out of corner of the area on the right, and shot high with his left foot before the ball touched the ground to the opposite angle of the goalkeeper. Argentina line up: Abbondanzieri; Scaloni, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Cambiasso (76th Aimar), Riquelme; Saviola (84th Messi), Crespo (75th Tévez). Mexico had a very good start, played better than Argentina and deserved a bit more in first half. In second half, Mexico defended more but Argentina only had two clear goal chances. Argentina didn't play well but could take advantage thanks to a great shot.

Jun 21. In the third match of Group C in Frankfurt, Argentina and Netherlands ended in a scoreless draw. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Burdisso (24th Coloccini), Ayala, Milito, Cufré; Maxi Rodríguez, Mascherano, Cambiasso, Riquelme (80th Aimar); Tévez, Messi (70th Cruz). Argentina looked for the victory a bit more than the Netherlands but they were not as effective in the area as in previous games. It was not necessary to take many risks because we have to play again in three days for the final rounds.

Jun 16. In the second match of Group C in Genselkirchen, Argentina hammered Serbia & Montenegro 6-0. At halftime they were winning 3-0 with goals from Maxi Rodríguez at 6th after pass from Saviola from the left; Cambiasso at 31st, great goal after great team play with a wall pass between Cuchu and Crespo's backheels pass; and Maxi Rodríguez again at 41st shooting from the left to correct a Saviola's shot from the right which Serbian defense had saved. In second half, Crespo scored at 78th after Messi's pass from the left, Tévez extended the advantage at 84th dribbling on the left with two tunnels to the defenders and Messi closed the scoring at 88th. Lucho González got injured. Argentina lined up: Abbondanzieri; Burdisso, Ayala, Heinze, Sorín; Mascherano, Lucho González (17th Cambiasso), Maxi Rodríguez (75th Messi), Riquelme; Saviola (59th Tévez), Crespo. Argentina were very effective in first half and during second half they took advantage of Serbia keeping the 0-3 and played at excellent level with many skill plays.

Jun 10. In the first match at Hamburg, Argentina won 2-1 over Cote d'Ivoire. Crespo scored the first goal at 24th after a free kick from Riquelme from the left and rebound in the defense. Saviola extended the advantage at 38th after a great pass from Riquelme that let him alone with the goalkeeper. Drogba closed the gap at 82nd.
During first half Cote d'Ivoire had more possesion of the ball and attacked more but Argentina could take profit of their chances. Good job of our National Team defense. In the second half, Argentina controlled the game in the first twenty minutes and when Pekerman took Crespo out, the African team began to attack but they only could close the gap.
